A very lazy cat

This is Sarah Jane, one of my three cats. She is named after a character from the British TV show Doctor Who from its earlier years in the 80s, Sarah Jane Smith.  We got her in October 2014, from a humane society in Effingham. We saw a photo of her as a kitten online and immediately knew we wanted to get her. Unfortunately, we had to wait longer than expected to pick her up, because she had pink eye. This meant however, that we got to meet some of her siblings. Our original plan was to get her and one of her sisters, but two of her sisters ended up attaching themselves to my parents, and we ended up with three.

When we first got her home, Sarah Jane hid immediately. We only saw her a handful of times in the first week. Her sisters warmed up to the new environment much quicker than she did, but she eventually came out from wherever she was hiding. She was still very wary of her surroundings and would jump at the slightest noise. Even now, five years later, she is very skittish. Simple small noises seem to scare her while having no effect on her siblings.

Sarah Jane is a very lazy, even by the very low standards set for cats' activity levels. She spends all of her time laying on the couch occasionally changing sleeping positions or moving to a different place on the couch. Whenever we come home after being out for a while, her sisters are often out to meet us, but Sarah Jane is always in the same spot as she was before we left, as if she never moved. For reasons I can't explain, she has a habit of sleeping right on top of the remote for the TV, especially when we want to watch something.

For some reason, all of the cats that we have ever had gravitated towards my dad. All three of our cats like to get attention from my dad, however two of them, Sarah Jane and Amelia tend to fight over who gets to sit by him. Whenever he sits down, it seems like one of those two magically appear by him. Eventually the other will show up and attempt to find a spot near him. One of them, usually Sarah Jane will swat or hiss at the other until one of them gives up and leaves. For such a innocent looking cat, Sarah Jane seems to like instigating conflicts.

A while ago, Sarah Jane got hooked on the taste of butter. My dad always has toast for breakfast, and as he was eating, or getting his tea, Sarah Jane would start to lick the butter off of his toast. This soon became so repetitive that he would make a separate piece of toast just for her to lick the butter off of.  Now, despite my mom and I telling him not to, my dad will just put some butter on his finger and let her lick it off. Sarah Jane never wants any other food that we have, just butter, which probably is not too good for her, but for some reason she loves it. Every morning, I wake up and hear Sarah Jane meowing at my dad asking him to bring her butter. We have some very strange cats.

  1. I loved reading about your cats. I think cats are the best pets and adopting them young is a very memorable experience. My family also adopted kittens from a humane center and watching them grow up and getting to know them is very special.

Besides, butter is almost definitely not good for the cat...

  2. The Sarah Jane I know from Doctor Who is an attention seeker rather than someone's whose lazy. It peculiar to see how often I see on blogs that cats are lazy. From all the influence/exposure I got to cat on T.V I have a very wrong view of cats liking to chase mouse around and very hyper-active. I also like how you compare your cats to each other and how they have their own competition with each other.
